Ice bath in Whaley Bridge

Cold water immersion in the heart of the High Peak.

Ice Bath at PEAK.

Cold. Controlled. And worth every second.

PEAK. brings cold water immersion to your recovery protocol — a state of the art ice bath, paired with our Scandinavian sauna makes for the perfect recovery experience.

Cold water immersion triggers a powerful physiological response: vasoconstriction, reduced inflammation, a dopamine spike, and a nervous system reset that carries through the rest of your day. At 8–12°C, every session is controlled, not just cold.

One of a kind experience, build it into your routine - this is yours.

The Science

Benefits of Cold Water Immersion

Cold exposure at the right temperature has documented physiological effects. These are not wellness marketing claims — this is physiology.

Muscle Recovery & Reduced Inflammation

Cold immersion reduces acute muscle inflammation and DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). Vasoconstriction followed by vasodilation flushes metabolic byproducts from muscles — a recovery mechanism used by athletes across every sport.

Dopamine & Mood Elevation

Cold water immersion produces a significant increase in dopamine and norepinephrine — measurably more than most stimulants. The elevated mood and improved motivation typically last 3–4 hours post-session, with cumulative benefits over weeks of regular practice.

Mental Resilience & Stress Regulation

Voluntary cold exposure trains the nervous system to regulate the stress response. Regular ice bath practice is associated with reduced cortisol reactivity, improved anxiety management, and greater overall emotional stability.

Improved Sleep Quality

Cold immersion in the afternoon or early evening is associated with improved sleep onset and deeper sleep stages — linked to the body's temperature regulation and recovery cycles post-session.

The Scandinavian sauna at PEAK., Whaley Bridge — part of the heat-cold contrast therapy protocol
Contrast Therapy

Sauna and ice bath, combined.

Heat followed by cold followed by rest. The contrast therapy protocol at PEAK. pairs the Scandinavian sauna with cold water immersion in a deliberate sequence — and the combination is more effective than either modality alone.

Vasodilation from the sauna heat opens blood vessels and drives circulation deep into muscle tissue. The cold immediately following triggers vasoconstriction — forcing that blood through your system in a powerful circulatory cycle. The net effect on recovery, inflammation, and mood is markedly greater than a standalone session.

The protocol

Heat → Cold → Rest. Each cycle 10–15 minutes.

Sauna temperature

Up to 85°C in the Finnish sauna cabin

Cold immersion

8–12°C — held for 1–4 minutes per round

Learn about the Sauna

Right for Athletes. Right for Everyone.

For Athletes

Trail runners on Kinder Scout and the Goyt Valley, cyclists, swimmers, gym athletes. Use cold water immersion as part of your weekly recovery block — post-long-run, post-race, post-heavy lifting. The physiological case for cold therapy after high-output training is well established.

For Wellness Practitioners

Come regularly for the combined ritual — sauna, cold, rest. The mental and physiological effects of cold immersion accumulate with practice. The dopamine uplift, stress regulation, and sleep improvements are most pronounced with consistent weekly sessions.

For First-Timers

You do not need cold water experience. You need to show up. If you're new to the ice bath, take it easy to start with, aim for a minute or whatever feels comfortable for you, exit slowly and carefully. The first one is the hardest. After that, you will understand the pull.
